Condair humidifiers protect exhibits at the German Historical Museum

As Germany’s foremost institution for historical enlightenment and dialogue, the German Historical Museum in Berlin masterfully combines the baroque grandeur of the historic Zeughaus with I.M. Pei’s striking modern exhibition hall. Condair is proud to protect priceless exhibits and ensure visitor comfort with advanced Condair DL hybrid humidification solutions that deliver precise, hygienic and energy-efficient climate control.

The German Historical Museum

Located on Unter den Linden in Berlin’s historic center, the Deutsches Historisches Museum (DHM) combines the baroque Zeughaus (Germany’s oldest building on the boulevard, 1730) with I.M. Pei’s striking glass-and-granite exhibition hall (opened 2006).

The Zeughaus hosts the permanent exhibition “German History in Images and Artifacts” across 86,000 sq ft, while Pei’s light-filled spiral is used for major temporary shows. Together they welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, right beside UNESCO-listed Museum Island.

To protect fragile artifacts – textiles, paper, paintings and wood – in both the 300-year-old Zeughaus and the modern hall, the DHM relies on Condair hybrid humidifiers for precise, hygienic and bacteria free humidity control year round.

Condair DL

The Condair DL is the next generation of the Condair Dual2, the world's most successful system for adiabatic humidification. Its hygienic credentials have proven successful in practice and were verified and certified by independent organizations with public responsibility.

Hybrid humidification relies exclusively on the advantages of atomization and evaporation. This results in the sustainable resolution of key problems which can emerge when these technologies are used in isolation. The humidification system is therefore the first choice in terms of hygiene, energy-efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Projects and references

Allianz-Arena, Munich

The Allianz Arena was one of the most controversial construction projects, even prompting a public vote by Munich citizens. It has since become a central landmark in northern Munich and an architectural symbol of the city. Particularly striking is the translucent, diamond-shaped outer shell, which can glow in different colors.

Using projectors and asymmetrical parabolic mirrors developed specifically for the Allianz Arena, the diamonds can be illuminated in different colors depending on the club's colors. The stadium is around 50 meters high, 200 meters long, and can accommodate 66,000 spectators. Condair RS steam humidifiers ensure optimum humidity levels.

Fogra Forschungsinstitut für Medientechnologien e.V., Aschheim (Germany)

In-room humidification ensures controlled humidity in the printing room. This guarantees a standard climate for the reliable testing of identity cards and banknotes.

Concert Halls and Organs

Concert halls are often historic buildings featuring natural materials such as wood and fabric. When the air becomes too dry, moisture is drawn from these materials, potentially causing structural deterioration that can be costly to repair and may negatively impact the venue’s acoustic performance. Large pipe organs are particularly vulnerable to humidity fluctuations due to their many wooden components, including wind chests, trackers, bellows, and casework. Even minor dimensional changes can lead to air leaks, sticking sliders, and mechanical misalignments. These issues may result in tuning and pitch problems, component failures, disrupted performances, and significant repair costs. Condair provides humidification solutions for some of the world’s most renowned music venues and pipe organs, including the Royal Albert Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Elbphilharmonie. The company also supports smaller venues around the world, such as church halls, with the same level of dedication and expertise.

Archives

Proper humidity control in archives ensures stable storage conditions by maintaining the right balance of moisture in the air. This prevents mold, pests, corrosion, and brittleness, while also improving energy efficiency compared to heating-only methods. The result is reliable, long-term preservation of both organic and inorganic collections.
